Theme Notebook 2
In the story “Thank You Ma’am” an older woman’s pocketbook was snatched by a teenage boy. Instead of taking him to jail, she took him home to teach him a lesson not to steal.  The theme, who you are today is a reflection of who you were in the past is evident in this short story.  Luella, the older woman, has learned from her past and uses it to teach Roger, the teenage boy, the lesson.  When she first introduces herself, she states, “When I get through with you, sir, you are going to remember Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones.”  She realized what he was doing and she wanted to help him. She had made mistakes before, maybe someone might have taught her a lesson so she wanted to pass the lesson on to someone who needs it.“I believe you’re hungry - or been hungry - to try and snatch my pocketbook.” Mrs. Luella must have realized Roger’s problem because usually if a person steals your money they need it to buy supplies that they want.  Even though she was very rough with him, she was very nice to feed him food.  She must have realized how it feels to be hungry because you would never give a robber food unless you knew what it felt like. Luella further stated, “I were young once and I wanted things I could not get...I have done things too, which I would not tell you, son - neither tell God.” This shows us that in her past Luella must have committed some actions that were not civilized. Luella was very honest by telling him that. She might have shared this to teach Roger a lesson in honesty by telling him he does not need to steal, he can earn it.  Luella kindly said“Now, here, take this 10$ and buy yourself some blue suede shoes.” She said that when she was done with him because she knew that he wanted a pair of shoes.  But she was very clear by telling him not to steal anymore. Overall, I think that Roger was taught a valuable lesson, I hope that it was not a waste of time and that he uses the lesson wisely.

In the article they said “The country's reoffending rate for young people after face to face meetings was 21%, while 71% of those in custody re-offended within a year.” It sounds like that when a person has done a crime its more than likely he would repeat it.In a way that is very unfair,if you have committed a crime no one trust you a much as before. In the article there they said “Adam Murray, 21, was sitting in a pub in Northern Ireland, his attacker asked for a cigarette and then punched him in the face.” “He said: "At first when I received the letter asking if I wanted to meet with the guy that punched me, it was pretty scary actually.” This was a very interesting statement because that teenager must have been very brave because I would not punch a 21 year old.As you read, it said that the robber ran up to Adam and punched him, after Adam was scared to see him. That proves that the robber made a impression on Adam before and now Adam thinks the robber is a violent guy.

Roger turned out to be a very kind and responsible person as he was not rude to Mrs.Luella. Mrs.Luella also became very aware of Rogers actions and knew how to deal with it.When I say that I mean she knew how to teach him and how to cheer him up.In the end Thank You Ma’am shows caring, responsibility and trust.

One's Identity is Fragile

When I was reading this story I would have to say that I knew something bad was going to happen. You know when your watching a movie and every thing is perfect and it gives you the assumption that someone is going to die or get hurt. In the story Lamb to the Slaughter by Roald Dahl, the main character Mary Maloney's identity is fragile. To me the phrase comes in when Pactrick was telling her that he was leaving her because right there he ruined someones identity because at that time cheating or divorcing someone was a big thing mostly because they would break their vows. To me if I was the only one that had this happen to me I would be so embarrassed. But when Mary Maloney killed him I thought she did the right thing even though it was wrong. Knowing in me I would do the same thing if I was pregnant and was the husband of a chief police detective. That also shows that she is fragile because she went crazy so fast and easily, she did not even think about it.

Well as you can see on top my picture is of a couple getting divorced or breaking up and as you know that happened in the story. The reason why I chose this is because if I was in Mary Maloney position I would be very angry or broken hearted at or to my husband.Like before I said if she had not have killed her husband her life would be very awkward and tough.Another thing I should clarify is that Patrick was just going to walk out on her,  that would be a much worst scenario. So her life shows to be fragile because its like the Eiffel Tower she has four legs the baby, husband, house and carry on with her personel life.If you take of one of those legs she would fall and smash. So that shows how fragile something is you take one thing away it just collapses.

But the wierd part or the part that proves to me that she is crazy is when she giggled and made the police eat all the evidence which is a very smart to get rid of the evidence but still a little weird, usually murders would burn it or throw it away somewhere far from the crime scene.I would have to say she is very smart and knew what she was doing because for a normal stay home wife she knew how the police would think and work.I am happy that she was able to find a way of not being the one who get all the problems on her even thought it was wrong. If she had not have killed her husband she would have all the  problems on her

because when you are a detective everyone gives you respect well on the other hand Mary wont get any respect because she's just a stay home wife.
